THROWBACK REVIEW: Mentirosa by Mellow Man Ace

You ever just randomly stumble across a song, one that you're pretty sure next to none of your peers have heard of, yet it's a song that you just can't get out of your mind, whether that be for positive or negative reasons? Follow up question: you ever see a music critic's best/worst list for a certain year based off of that year's Billboard year-end chart, look at what they said about similar songs in the one you're thinking about's vein, and wonder "wow, how did this person not put that song on the list?" Well, there are two things you need to know about me. The first is that I follow and keep up with the blog postings of one B-HOP Da Maestro. I briefly mentioned him in my 1995 best list I posted on my birthday six months ago, but let me just say that this man is an excellent reviewer as well as, from my experience following him on Twitter, an excellent person. This man can articulate why he likes/doesn't like/feels ambivalent towards a song in ways I could only dream of. He is very detailed, descriptive, and thorough in what elements of a song either make him smile in delight or revolt and quiver in disgust. He and I may not always see eye to eye on certain songs, but I do see where he is coming from at least most of the time. Another thing you need to know about me is that usually when I go through a particular year in music's Billboard year-end chart, I watch, for reference, videos on YouTube where snippets of the songs from that year-end chart are played in order backwards from 100 to 1 before listening to the songs that really stand out to me, whether for better or worse, in full to form some sort of opinion on them. One year that I keep coming back to, if only for the fact that it keeps popping up time after time in my "recommended videos" section, is 1990, and the second song from that list, at position #99, I keep hearing and have not been able to stop thinking about for nearly a year and a half is Mentirosa by Mellow Man Ace, a Cuban rapper from Los Angeles California who used to be a member of hip hop group DVX before leaving to pursue a solo career in 1988 before the group would become Cypress Hill the following year. Recently, B-Hop finished up a project that he had been working on for months titled BACK TO THE 90s, a project in which he went through each individual year of the 1990s, did an in-depth worst list on each year from 1990 to 1999 (with his best list added at the end), and concluded with an in-depth, two-part look at his 100 favorite songs of that entire decade. I remember seeing him announce this on Twitter last year and being stoked as you have no idea how much of a sucker for retro lists like this I am, and given that he has expressed his disdain for douchey Hip Hop/R&B songs that involve cheating and being an all out bag of dicks for no good reason and/or no reason at all, such examples including Loyal and Post To Be as well as later thrashing I Got A Man by Positive K on the 1993 worst list and My Baby Daddy by B-Rock & Da Bizz on the 1997 worst list, I thought for sure that this song would be a shoe-in for his 1990 worst list given what I heard in the short, 25 second snippet of the song in this video. Alas, it got not even a dishonorable mention, and if I'm being perfectly honest, I don't really have a clue why because oh dear god, I am ready to say it: I consider this song to be the absolute worst hit song of 1990. Yes, even worse than the two Michael Bolton songs I used to give that title to (those being How Am I Supposed To Live Without You? and When I'm Back On My Feet Again, for those wondering) despite that man being the cancer of soft rock.

Where to even begin with this song? Oh, I know, how about with the godawful production? This song manages to take the guitar line from Santana's Evil Ways and make it sound so limp and pathetic that it quite literally sounds like the guitar is dying. It also tacks on a line from another Santana song, No One To Depend On, and chops it up and makes it stutter more than Jimmy from South Park because.........horse on a rainbow, hell if I know. Then there's the percussion consisting mainly of an annoying jumping sound from an old SNES game. And don't even get me started on the record scratching, oh my god, the fucking record scratching. Look, having the record scratch sound effect once or twice in a song isn't really that big of a deal for me, but when you have them out the ass like this song does, holy shit, it is un-fucking-bearable.

Then we have Mellow Man Ace himself, and I'll be straight up with you guys, this guy flat out sucks as an emcee. This dude has no flow whatsoever. His flow is so lethargic and lifeless. I'm surprised MC Hammer didn't sue for jacking his flow. On top of that, there's the mixing of the English language with Spanish to try and make the song a little more interesting, which I would be fine with if it wasn't so goddamn embarrassing. For something like that to work, you either have to be high energy and charismatic, or you have to be able to pull off a smooth, cool guy attitude. Say what you want about Gerardo's performance on Rico Suave, he at least had the former going for him. Mellow Man Ace tries to pull off the latter, but he is failing hard, and it just makes me want to punch this guy in the dick.

Of course, if the delivery didn't make me want to punch this asshole's penis off, then the lyrics would because now we come to the thing that pisses me off most about the song, the content. In this song, the narrator finds out that his girl is cheating because he received information that she went to a party instead of to her uncle's house like she said she was going to, unaware of the fact that he and the bartender are friends. Now, I will admit that the girl cheating in this scenario is most definitely in the wrong for cheating and lying to her boyfriend like that. However, the way this guy handles it is beyond childish. Dude, she may have been in the wrong, but the way you tar and feather her doesn't exactly paint you in a positive light either, ya feel me? He then goes on to say she's nothing short of a liar, a "straight mentirosa" as he calls her, who will say one thing one day and says something else the next, which calls into question why the hell he's with this woman if he seems to have this must distrust for her in the first place. The part that really tips this song into outright offensive territory for me, though, is that in the second half of the song, he outright slutshames her and makes her out to not be a worthy girlfriend because of how many guys she's slept with. Look, I don't care if this woman cheats on you a million times, steals your car, and steals your credit card and puts thousands of dollars worth of clothes, jewelry, and other expensive things on there. You do not ever, EVER say that a woman is unworthy of being with someone due to how sexually promiscuous she is or how many partners she may have had in the past. That is the sort of regressive, misogynistic attitude that damn near everyone hates, and to see this guy basically saying "come get her, boys, she's a whore anyway, so do what you want with her" is just blood-boilingly reprehensible in every single since of the word.

There you have it: Mentirosa by Mellow Man Ace: my pick for the worst hit song of 1990. A terribly produced, immature, childish piece of garbage that makes me want to shove scissors in my ear whenever I hear it. B-Hop, how in the nine realms of Asgard did this miss your worst list? Glad I got that off my chest. See you guys next time.

REVIEW: Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShlW5plD_40

Y'know, I gotta admit, I'm in the minority of people who doesn't hate Meghan Trainor. While nearly everyone was mentioning All About That Bass somewhere on their worst hit songs of 2014 lists somewhere, whether as a dishonorable mention or on the list proper, I was over here jamming out to it. I found it to be an innocent song promoting body positivity (albeit maybe not in the best way) that people looked way too much in to with fun instrumentation and good singing from Trainor herself. Same goes for Lips Are Movin, but I'm gonna save my words for that song (*wink wink*).

Now, with all that said, can I say the same thing about her third top 20 hit, Dear Future Husband? Well................nope. Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope ALL OF MY NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My God, what the hell were the people involved in this song's making thinking? Seriously, there is no way anyone with at least one functioning brain cell would even for a second think of writing something so abysmal, so horrendous, so abhorrent that it makes me feel bad for identifying as a fan of Meghan Trainor. Seriously, I will defend her a lot, but I do have my limits, and this is definitely the breaking point.

First off, I do wanna say that not everything about this song is bad. The instrumentation is still funky and upbeat with a ton of energy and flavor behind it, and Trainor's vocals are still good as always. That being said, however, all of it is absolutely demolished by what the lyrical content wound up being. Essentially what Dear Future Husband is is Meghan Trainor listing off what she would like for the man that marries her later on in life to do for her. It starts off innocent enough just asking for compliments, flowers, dates, and basic stuff like that, but as the song progresses, Meghan gets more and more demanding and pretty damn psychotic. Seriously, what kind of man do you know that would put up with having to apologize after every argument (even in situations where the wife was clearly in the wrong), not being allowed to have any dirty thoughts whatsoever, and not being allowed to see his family as often as he would like to? Furthermore, how lame is it that this is addressed to a future significant other? I mean, seriously, what is she, 11?

Overall, this song is a giant trainwreck. It had really good music and vocals, but damn if those awful lyrics didn't completely render any positive this song had going for it completely useless. I wanted to like it, I really did, but goddamn, do I absolutely despise this song. Meghan, I love you, honey, but please, for future reference, no more crap like this. I'm giving this a 0.5/5, and I'll see you guys next time.

Collab Review: Top 10 Wost Songs (By Otherwise Good Artists)

Hello, guys, and welcome to my first ever collab. Joining me in this endeavor will be the ever so awesome Show With No Name. This will be the first part of this two part project we've been working on together for a while now. The 2nd half will hopefully be out pretty soon. Hope you guys enjoy.

It's always great whenever there's an artist that gets big in the music industry that gets big and has so many great songs that they deserve all the success and fame they earned. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that they'll strike gold 100% of the time as even they aren't immune to making songs that are either bland, ear bleed inducing, or just downright insulting. Today, those are the songs that we're looking at today. We are counting down the top 10 worst songs, ehhh by otherwise good artists. Show will go first, and then I'll give my thoughts. Let's get started.

10) Song: Uptown Girl
      Artist: Billy Joel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCuMWrfXG4E

Show: I wasn’t aware that Billy Joel could get more annoying than he was in We Didn’t Start the Fire, but then Halston showed me uptown girl (thanks, buddy).

Me: You're welcome. :P

Show: Anyway, There are artists that can make a twang sound pleasant, but Billy Joel is definitely not one of them. I feel like I get dumber every time he goes “GIIIIIIII-HIIIIIIIRRLLL!!!” The production is so bland that it barely exists. The lyrics also suck. I don’t know anybody who would enjoy hearing that they live in a “white bread world”. Billy Joel has proven many a time that he is a better singer, musician, and songwriter than this. I like to think that after hearing this song, this “Uptown Girl” laughed in his face and walked away.

Me: As someone who actually happens to like We Didn't Start The Fire, Uptown Girl just grinds every gear that I have. That annoying twang in Joel's voice doesn't work for him at all, and it gets really grating really fast. The instrumentation is just kinda....there, which is unusual for Billy seeing as he usually has enough unique personality to let the lyrics and production shine through, so the fact that he gave us something so bland and lifeless is just bewildering, and not even in a good way. Seriously, Joel, this is a fire you started, and it's complete tripe.

9) Song: Magic
    Artist: Coldplay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtb11P1FWnc
Show: In a vacuum, this song is not particularly bad. It is mainly just bland and forgettable. But we don’t live in a vacuum. We live in a world where “Madness” by Muse exists. This isn’t a blatant ripoff, but when you notice the similarities you can never look past it. The comparisons between the two songs are no contest. Madness is effortless, Magic is lazy. Madness is clever, Magic is boring. Madness is impressive, Magic is mundane. The best part of Madness is the theme repeated in the bassline. The production in Magic is so unoriginal that I even now have a hard time remembering how it goes. It’s not as objectively bad as some of the other songs on this list, but the lack of inspiration sinks it for me.

Me: Tedious, bland, monotonous, boring, humdrum, mundane, colorless, flavorless, flat, uninteresting, dry drab, lackluster, vapid, trite, stale, emotionless, passionless, dreary, wearisome, unexciting, insipid, weak, blah, ho-hum, weak, and dull as dishwater. There, as many synonyms for bland that I could find. That's really all this song is. It is, to quote Todd In The Shadows, "a giant beige avalanche burying you in suck." Thank god this was followed by A Sky Full Of Stars, otherwise we'd be stuck with this, a song that if it were a piece of gum, it'd be Dubble Bubble. NEXT!

8) Song: Honey Pie
    Artist: The Beatles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS7wxh_atFY
Show:  Once again, I have Halston to thank for my knowing about this song (whee).

Halston: Don't you just love having me introduce you to all this bad music?

Show: Yeeeah. -_-
Anywho, How could the band that made Hey Jude have done this? This sounds like something from a cartoon from the forties! I feel like I’m on Splash Mountain listening to this. The lyrics are an abomination. It basically says: “Hey, Honey Pie, I know that you made it big in America, but I think that you being with me is more important than an amazing dream career. So get back over here!” And seriously, who decided on Honey Pie? That doesn’t even sound like a real baby name! Why don’t you call her “Sweetypoopookins” or “Rastafastapartybunchkins” while you’re at it? But this was 1968. The Beatles could have farted into a microphone and the fans would have lapped it up. This honey pie grew sour long ago.

Me: Yeah, it doesn't at all surprise me that this topped Marc Mues' list of what he thought were the top 10 worst Beatles songs, and quite frankly, I don't blame him, because this song, although by one of the most if not THE most iconic rock band throughout history, is outright crap. The lame production, inane lyrics, and the obvious fact that nobody involved in the making of this song cared even remotely is enough to conceal it to the trash heap. Of course, one listen through the song would make that plainly obvious, but who would be stupid enough to.....oh, right, Show & I........ :/

7) Song: This Is How We Do
    Artist: Katy Perry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RMQksXpQSk

Show: This is Katy Perry’s worst song. No doubt about it. With this song, Katy Perry has become everything that her harshest critics have said she was: boring, stupid, tasteless, without talent, and trying too hard. Also, how does one get one’s nails done “Japaneasy”? But the worst part is where she gives a shout-out and her respect to all the people who use their rent money to buy alcohol. Katy Perry never seemed like the kind of person who would actively encourage a self destructive lifestyle, but I guess she is, after all. I was under the impression that she was smarter than this song, too. It’s no big deal, and nobody on the track acts as uncaring as Perry herself.

Me: I'm with Show and, well, just about everyone else in thinking this is Perry's worst single. None of the elements of the production are cohesive as all they are is an uncontrolled mass of loud percussion and messy synths, Katy sounds as disconnected and uninterested as she possibly can, but worst of all, this song is a ripoff of Last Friday Night (TGIF) in all the wrong ways. Where Last Friday Night was a fun, energetic, disco-esque song about having no regrets and throwing a wild party, This Is How We Do is a boring, annoying song that's basically just about bragging about being as trashy, unappealing, and irresponsible as possible, and the unintentional racism with that "Japaneasy" line certainly doesn't help. There is a great deal of Katy Perry's material that I really enjoy whether I really should or not (as evidenced by Dark Horse winding up on my best list at one point), but she's better than this (which is something that can be said about every artist and their song that winds up on this list).

6) Song: OMG
    Artist: Usher feat. will.i.am
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RnPB76mjxI
Show:  This is just bizarre. I don’t even really know what to say about it. Why is there repetitive copy machine bleeping? Why is there a stadium full of people chanting in this personal love song? Who thought that “break you down” was sexy? Who let will.i.am in? How can a booty be “pow-pow-pow”? Who actually says “Oh my gosh, I’m so in love”? This song makes me think of Boom Boom Pow, but even that song was better executed than this. A more appropriate title would be WTF.

Me: ...............I don't even know what else to say. You hit the nail right on the head, Show.

5) Song: Acapella
    Artist: Karmin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJWJfRAGnHc

Show: I’m not going to pretend like Karmin are musical visionaries who will affect music until the end of time. But I will say that they are good artists who make nice, simple, catchy pop songs. You would not get this from Acapella. This is so weird. What does “going A capella” mean? Is she the singing and he the music? But both members of Karmin sing! Are they aware that acapella groups are a gigantic thing? Are they aware that the term “solo” exists? And what on God’s green earth is the falsetto part? It might be a slice of the ultimate irony that “Brokenhearted”, their best song, was just them making a silly pop song, whereas “Acapella”, their worst song, is them trying to be more experimental and deep.

Me: Yes, I know what the metaphor is supposed to mean, but it's just so awkwardly worded that I can't look past it. That's not my real issue with the song, though. My main problem lies with the musical elements, from the ear bleedingly screechy falsetto to the sterile and overproduced instrumentation to the grating vocals right down to the fact that none of it is cohesive or comes together in a way that's pleasant to listen to at all. Karmin, I usually like your stuff, but this left me brokenhearted.

4) Song: HeadBand
    Artist: B.o.B. feat. 2 Chainz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2rqUlYN1m8

Show: This song physically hurt me. I considered B.o.B. to be one of the titans of rap, like Lupe Fiasco or Kendrick Lamar. But, since Halston told me about Headband, I wonder (THANK YOU SO MUCH, HALSTON!!! YOU’RE SUCH A GOOD FRIEND!!!!).

Me: MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! >:)

Show: This is the very worst beat DJ Mustard has ever made, and that is saying an awful lot. 2 Chainz is being his normal ridiculous self. But man, B.o.B. has never been less B.o.B. than he is here. After songs like Nothing on You, Magic, Airplanes, and Both of Us, listening to this song almost gave me actual whiplash. Headband just makes me sad. This makes B.o.B. no different from any other mainstream rapper. Great job, you broke my heart a little bit.

Me: I don't exactly agree with Show on the beat being the worst that DJ Mustard's ever produced (I think that'd be Or Nah), but I'll be damned if this isn't a close second. In this song, B.o.B. goes from being someone who used to be able to craft creative lyrical work about thoughtful and insightful subjects and/or put a new spin on the typical rap subjects to being a generic club rapper with generic and uninspired lyrics that we've heard a million times before with the painfully unfunny punchline thrown in every now and then. Oh, and 2 Chainz is on the song.
"Chain hang to my ding-a-ling"
Let's just move on.

3) Song: 7/11
    Artist: Beyoncé
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4YRWT_Aldo
Show:  I am still not entirely convinced that this song was not made for Guantanamo as a means of torture. I know that Beyoncé has talent, but I would be lying if I said that there weren’t plenty of songs in the running for this slot. But this is the very bottom of the barrel. She is just saying what she is doing. This can’t have taken more than two minutes to write. And that production is absolutely wretched. If songs like Drunk in Love or Partition are as rewarding to listen to as white noise, 7/11 is a high pitched squealing you can barely hear that gives you a headache.

Me: I'm gonna wait 'til December to go into full detail about my thoughts on this one, but here's what I'll say for now: lack of ability to make a Big Gulp joke aside, this song is somehow something I never thought was even possible to exist, and that is a Beyoncé song worse than Diva. That should never be possible. The beat is a discordant mess that just drills its way into your skull in an unpleasant manner, the autotune slathered all over Mrs. Knowles' vocals are grating as hell, the lyrics are inane, and the whole song is just one giant, unlistenable mess.

2) Song: Hello Kitty
    Artist: Avril Lavigne
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiaYDPRedWQ
Show: I’m going to be honest with you. I have listened to this song the whole way through one time, for the sake of this list. Even that time was about three times too many. Avril Lavigne's self titled album was a great album, showing her at the most articulate and smart she has been in years. From the inclusive, joyous Here’s to Never Growing Up, to the innocent and nostalgic 17. From the bizarre but fun Bad Girl to the flawed but still solid Let Me Go. But then there is this abomination. Avril Lavigne seems to act more and more immature as time goes on. What happened here? Was pleasing Japan really worth gouging out your credibility? Did the Japanese even like this? I sure as hell didn’t. I pray that Avril Lavigne’s artistic credibility can recover, but I doubt it. Gack.

Me: Not only does this song not belong on Avril's self-titled album, but it doesn't belong in existence, period. The rock instrumentation is this disjointed clusterf**k of guitars, synths, and percussion, Lavigne's vocals are unbearable, and the atrocity that is the dubstep breakdown was just plain unfitting and unnecessary. Then there's how juvenile the lyrics are. I didn't have high expectations for the lyrical content on this thing, but I certainly wasn't expecting Avril to sink so low as to sing lyrics such as "let's all slumber party like a fat kid on a pack of Smarties."
(Yeah, I used the same picture twice. You got a problem with that?)

1) Song: FACK
    Artist: Eminem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU6AQIuf-go
Show: Without exaggeration, this is one of the worst songs that I have ever heard in my entire life. I feel like Eminem is sharting all over me. I actually think that Fack is the single most repulsive sound of all time. And this song tries its hardest to live up to that legacy. There is no way he made this song with any intention other than just pissing people off. This is not art. This is not music. This is not holy. I wonder if the violinist knew what the violin would be used for. I hope not. I hate this. It sucks. Analyzing it any more would be expending too much effort for it. Fack off forever.

Me: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry guys, I just had to let that out. Seriously, what the fack is the facking crap. The beat is way too weak, and Eminem's most annoying impressions blast through to a point where I literally feel the need to take a shower afterward. As for the lyrics, it's basically about a guy getting off from getting hurt and having a gerbil shoved up his butt. Who.....who thought that was a good idea? Seriously, it wasn't. It's just plain gross in the worst way possible. This song is just plain disgusting. It's worse than the entirety of both Encore and Relapse combined, that's how awful it is. It's an audio nightmare, and I'm glad the general public decided never to let this get popular. To anyone reading this post, just remember this: Fack is whack.

Show: Nice one, Halston.

Me: Thanks, Show.

Show: You know, I'm looking through the list right now, where's Jar Of Hearts?

Me: HEY! You know how much I love that song.

Show: Oh, come on. It's so badly written.

Me: Do you wanna make it to the second part of our collab?

Show: You're right. Sorry.

Me: Well, see you guys next time.

Show: Ta ta, folks.

REVIEW: This Is How We Roll by Florida Georgia Line & Luke Bryan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbxuXq_981s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KctTCSLLXKQ

Bro country, die. Just...die. You are useless, and we no longer need you.

So yeah, Florida Georgia Line, what is there really to say about them? They started off pretty decent with songs like Get Your Shine On, 'Round Here, and heck, I even like the original version of Cruise. However, over time, they just became more and more generic and lost the qualities that made them decent.

This brings us to This Is How We Roll, the song on the table today. Did I mention that bro country needs to die? Well, it does, and songs like this are a prime example. Songs like this are nothing more than homogenous and generic crap talking about the stereotypical country music topics of women, trucks, beer, etc., and pandering to the masses that only care if those topics are mentioned. It's not that good of a song. The instrumentation is clunky, the lead singer sounds like he's forcing a southern accent, Luke Bryan (an artist who I think is pretty good) barely gets any time to sing, and it all fails.

Of course, I'm sure FGL, Luke Bryan, and anyone involved with the making of this song knew that, so what do they do? They make a remix of it. Gee, didn't see that coming. This time they recruit Jason DeRulo (dammit, DeRulo, why do you keep doing this to me?). Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with this, but there's just one problem: THE SONG ALREADY HAS A GUEST ARTIST!!!!! Seriously, as much as I like Luke Bryan, wasn't he enough? Once again, just like with what happened with the remix of Cruise, unnecessary autotune, overly used synths, and EDM beats are added to make it a more poppy song. The difference between this and Cruise (Remix), however, is the core song here wasn't that good to begin with. And do I even have to mention how irrelevant DeRulo's verse is? I thought Nelly's verse on the remix of Cruise added nothing, but at least he stuck to the topic of the song. In this case, however, FGL talk about them picking up chicks because of how country they are whereas DeRulo talks about picking up chicks because of how "gangsta" he is. News flash, DeRulo: YOU'RE NOT GANGSTA!!! Even worse, he takes, like, half of Luke Bryan's verse. Bryan wasn't given that much time to sing in the original, and Jason DeRulo really had no business taking any of it. Besides, no matter how much you like or hate Luke Bryan, you have to admit that he is a much better fit for the little interlude he does than DeRulo will ever be.

Overall, I give the original a 2 out of 5 for at least being somewhat catchy, and the remix a big, fat 0 out of 5.

REVIEW: Rude by MAGIC!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIh2xe4jnpk

Why is this song in the top 10? Why is this song in the top 5? WHY IS THIS SONG SITTING AT #2?!?!?!? Seriously, if there's one song that really doesn't deserve the success it's attained, it's this one. Sure, there are some songs that it's awesome that they get the recognition they get despite not being deserving of it, but this definitely isn't one of them.

Let's start with the instrumentation. If there was ever a song that was the definition of cod reggae, this was it. The production on this is just so slow and boring, and it really doesn't mix well with the tone of the lyrics and the emotion conveyed in lead singer Nasri Atweh's vocals.

Speaking of the vocals, why are they so God awful and whiny? Seriously, do I even need to explain how much this guy sounds like a total crybaby?

Finally, there's the lyrics, and my God I thought they'd be the saving grace of the song, but nope. They just keep reminding me of how awful the song is. It starts off innocent enough with a guy ready to go ask his girlfriend's father for his blessing so they can get married. The song takes a turn for the worst, however, when after the father gives a simple "no," Nasri acts as though the girl's father just stole his wallet and blew all his money on useless junk. Okay, maybe that's exaggerating a bit, but from what we know, the father didn't make any inflammatory remarks of any sort nor did he do anything to Nasri and/or cause him complete torment when he was in the relationship with the girl. The problem here is pacing. No detail as to why Nasri thinks the father is "being so rude," and it just escalates way too quickly. Not only that, but to add insult to injury, Nasri says he's just gonna marry the girl anyway. Dude, if you were gonna marry her anyway, why did you bother asking for her father's blessing? Why are you so disrespectful of his wishes? Seriously, I don't think I've viewed someone as so much of a dick in these relationship songs.

I'll give Atweh some credit for actually being pretty charismatic in this song, which is what bumps it up to a 1 out of 5, but even still, this song's success was unwarranted and unneeded, and I won't be surprises or disappointed if they never have another hit.

REVIEW: Wiggle by Jason DeRulo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiP14ED28CA&feature=kp

Here's something you thought you'd never hear out of me: I don't hate Jason DeRulo. In fact, I kinda like him. In the vast majority of his songs, I found myself blown away at how much energy he brought to the table, either in the emotion of his delivery (Whatcha Say, Marry Me, etc.) or in his choice of instrumentation (The Other Side, Don't Wanna Go Home, etc.). One unfair criticism of Mr. DeRulo is that a lot of the material he provides is nothing more than stupid and asinine, and even I'll admit, he isn't a good lyricist. That said, however, contrary to what the popular belief is, stupid doesn't always equal bad. Songs like Red Solo Cup by Toby Keith, I Love It by Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX, and pretty much anything in Weird Al Yankovic's discography are incredibly stupid, but they're still great songs. Now, don't get me wrong, stupid can also be utterly butchered, and you can see examples of that in The Fox and the Harlem Shake from last year. However, I never took DeRulo seriously, and I guess that's why I never really had a huge issue with him. I didn't even mind his overuse of autotune and stunning lack of personality.

Now, with all that said, you'd think I would enjoy his latest hit song, Wiggle. To that, I respond with this: Oh boy oh boy are you wrong.

Remember what I said about Jason having a lot of energy in his songs? Well, there's not an ounce to be found here. I would've been able to forgive the idiotic lyrics ("go 'head, go ham sammich." I rest my case), but the beat is so boring and grating that I can't get past them. The barely there instrumentation pretty much forces you to focus on the lyrics. Oh, and I wasn't kidding about him being a good lyricist, because these lyrics are beyond imbecilic. If they were any good, they'd be a redeeming quality to this song. They aren't, though, so they're not. Lastly, let's not forget that awkward pause after he says "you know what to do with that big fat butt." To me, that awkward pause represents the people who helped in the making of this song thinking "Dear God, he didn't just say that, did he?" Finally, there's Snoop's verse, which can be described using the following four words: monotonous, boring, lame, disgusting.

Overall, Wiggle is an unlistenable mess with absolutely nothing saving it from being terrible. I give it a 0 out of 5, and it's really sad I have to because I know Jason DeRulo can do so much better, but that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

(Note: Just because I give a song a negative rating doesn't mean I will look down on or bash anyone who happens to enjoy said song I gave the aforementioned negative rating towards. Please keep that in mind if you see me give a high rating to a song you dislike.)
